Abstract

The excited positive ion CO 2 + (C̃ 2Σ g +) in its ground vibrational level predissociates completely to O +( 4 S u) + CO( 1Σ g +). Of the CO produced 15 ± 10 5% is in its ground vibrational state, while the remaining 85 ± 10 5% is in its first vibrational excited level. This determination of the states of the products of a predissociation has been made using photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy and a new method of photoion kinetic energy analysis.
