Abstract

Given the growth in employment in the hospitality industry and the relatively low wages when compared with manufacturing, hospitality employees may be likely targets of union organizing drives. Very little research has been conducted on union election activity in the hospitality industry. The purpose of this paper was to examine factors which may influence union organizing in this industry. Predictors of union success as well as union support were investigated in order to determine which factors affected unionization. Results indicated that union organizing was influenced by the union involved, unit size, type of employee, type of election, presence of multiple unions, and industry segment. It is concluded that unions may not be overly successful organizing in the industry unless organizing patterns change.
