Abstract

The cause of pain in chronic pancreatitis is multifactorial. Endoscopic placement of a pancreatic duct (PD) stent in this setting is based on the concept that ductal decompression reduces PD pressure, with resultant improvement in pain. To evaluate the correlation between stent patency, the pancreatogram appearance, and clinical response, researchers in Alabama prospectively evaluated the change in caliber of the PD after endoscopic stenting in 25 consecutive patients with chronic pancreatitis.
