Abstract

ABSTRACT This longitudinal study examined predictors of ADHD behaviors in Chinese adoptees. We collected the data over 10 years from 173 adoptees and their adoptive mothers. We analyzed the data to explore the associations between age at adoption, family type, internalizing problems, externalizing problems, adverse life events, and the adoptees’ ADHD outcomes. Results showed that internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and adverse life events significantly predicted later ADHD behaviors, explaining 13% variance of the outcomes. The study shed light on contributing factors of ADHD behaviors in Chinese adoptees and offered implications for counselors working with Chinese adoptees.
