Abstract

Rarely can accurate predictions of mature wood properties be made from the wood of juvenile trees, but it is very important to learn how to do so as accurately and as soon as possible. It was clearly stated by Loo et al. (1984): “Genetic gains per unit time are inversely proportional to the length of a selection cycle, thus the value of the juvenile form of a trait in predicting the mature form is an important consideration in a breeding program.” Therefore, there is great interest (and great utility) in determining any relationship between juvenile and mature wood, and especially between juvenile wood and values for the whole mature tree (Fig. 6.1).
