Abstract

1. The horizontal displacements of high concrete dams during operation can be predicted by means of a special analysis of the data of full-scale observations of the structures during reservoir filling. Most effective is the analysis based on use of the so-called method of influence coefficients. By means of this analysis the measured total displacements can be divided into components and on the basis of this nomograms in the displacements during operation at any time and at any reservoir level can be obtained. 2. To check the behavior of concrete dams during normal operation, it is necessary to know certain values of those measured quantities within which the operation of the structure will be safe, i.e., the operating personnel should have criteria for safe structure operation. The maximum and minimum values of displacements obtained by the nomograms can serve this purpose.
