Abstract

The fixed principal axes method proposed by Wittmer et al. (Nature 1996, 392, 337) for the analysis of the stress distribution in a sandpile has been used to predict the stress distribution in a two-dimensional bunker. The results are compared with those predicted by Janssen's method and are found to be considerably greater than his results for the active case, but not quite as large as his prediction for the passive case.
