Abstract

Estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria are dominant clinical predictors of renal outcomes in chronic kidney disease. Wong and collaborators report that BMP-7 and transforming growth factor-β1 improve risk discrimination for renal end points in type 2 diabetes. However, to develop predictive models, clearly defined, clinically meaningful, validated end points must be used. End-stage renal disease and kidney transplantation remain the most definitive renal end points, whereas doubling of serum creatinine and death from renal disease lack rigor.
