Abstract
The feasibility of using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to analyze precision seed metering device has been confirmed, whether this method is also suitable for analyzing metering mechanism for drill has not been reported so far. In this paper, the boundary model of one of the most common metering mechanisms for drill, fluted roll metering device, is established based on its Computer Aided Design (CAD) model. The seed model is built using the method of combination of different circular arcs. Through a combined simulation and experimental effort, using self-developed two-dimensional (2D) DEM software, the seeds behaviors in fluted roll metering devices have been studied at microscopic and macroscopic levels, good agreements are concluded. The results showed the feasibility of using DEM to analyze the performance of fluted roll metering devices.
