Abstract
The propagation behavior of fatigue cracks was investigated under various stress ratios using structural carbon steel specimens containing small pre-cracks. The threshold condition of crack extension from precracks was given by a constant value of the threshold effective stress intensity rang for long cracks, A ^^^. As a crack grew, the crack closure developed and the effective stress intensity range decreased. When the effective stress intensity range dropped below AK^oc the crack was arrested. The cyclic resistance-curve-method was used'to predict the fatigue limits of the pre-cracked components. The predicted values of the fatigue limit for crack extension, the fatigue limit for fracture, and the length of non-propagating cracks agreed very well with the experimental results.
