Abstract

Recent changes in Soil Taxonomy have made linear extensibility an independent criterion for defining vertic subgroups. There are many soils for which extensibility values have not been determined but clay data are available. The relationship between coefficient of linear extensibility (COLE) values and clay content was studied for Iowa soils for which COLE data were available. The objective of this study was to determine if COLE values could be accurately predicted for those soils where only clay data were available. Results of this study indicate there was a good correlation between COLE values and clay content and the relationship can be used to help classify Iowa soils for which COLE data are not available.
