Abstract

A prediction method of S-N curve without fatigue tests is proposed based on the small crack growth model expressed as dadN=C∗σσw-1m∗an∗, where a: crack size in terms of area, σ: applied stress amplitude, σw: fatigue limit which decreases cycle by cycle with crack growth. The constants C*, m* and n* were identified to be C* = 10–4, m* = 2.0 and n* = 1 for various steels, cast irons and alloys. S-N curves for various materials were predicted by the proposed model and were compared with experimental data. The predicted S-N curves are in good agreement with the experimental results for conservative predictions.
