Abstract

Various data communication systems are being developed which use existing cable infrastructure. These include power line telecommunication (PLT) using low voltage electricity distribution networks (LVEDN), digital subscriber lines (xDSL) using existing copper telephony pairs and home networks using domestic mains electricity wiring or indoor telephone wiring. The EMC implications of such systems for MF and HF radio communications are examined. Radiation characteristics of various configurations of mains power and indoor telephone cable networks are presented. A method of measuring radiated emissions from communication networks below 30 MHz is also described. This uses a set of high sensitivity H-field measuring antennas covering the frequency range 100 kHz-30 MHz.
