Abstract

This paper describes how information on times of travel, dispersion and peak concentrations along the River Wear in Durham (England) was obtained by field investigations during 1977. A major part of the investigation was the observation of dispersion and rates of travel of a radio-tracer, 82Br. Results are briefly described together with a theoretical treatment of times of travel based on adaptation of the Kleitz—Seddon law and existing hydrographic records. Time of travel curves are also produced for median flow conditions. Predictions of dispersion and peak concentrations are achieved by solution of the advective-diffusion equation for the special case of an instantaneous injection of tracer at a point on the river system.
