Abstract

The spatial distribution of the variance of fluctuating concentration about the local mean is modelled by a vertical and crosswind turbulent diffusion of variance identical to the mean field. The influence of local production is accounted for by the location of an effective variance source, and dissipation in the along wind direction by a variable source strength. The effect of the surface on reducing fluctuations is simulated by an image sink. The simple explicit functional form that results is in good agreement with wind tunnel measurements of fluctuations in the plume from a point source.
