Abstract

The forces acting on a gas tungsten arc (GTA) weld pool are analyzed. A mechanics-model of the completely pene-trated weld pool is developed and its collapsing criteria are given out. The transient variations of all the forces, which affect the weld pool collapsing, are computed and discussed. Under the condition of different welding velocities, the suitable values of welding current are predicted for GTA welding stainless steel and mild steel sheets. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental ones, which verifies the practicability of this model.
