Abstract

Research identifies parents as an important source of emerging adult decision-making support. Based on previous advice theory, this study examined the impact of parent, situation, relationship, message characteristics, and advice solicitation on emerging adult implementation of parental advice. Participants (N = 133) completed an online questionnaire, and hierarchical regression analyses showed parent similarity, empathy, autonomy support, advice quality, and advice efficacy were significant predictors of parental advice implementation. There was also a significant difference in implementation for solicited and unsolicited advice. The results offer theoretical framework support and pragmatic implications for parent–emerging adult advice communication.
