Abstract
The problem of predicting the direction of crack growth in a centre-notched unidirectional graphite-epoxy is investigated. A homogeneous anisotropic elasticity analysis is presented in conjunction with four crack growth criteria. Comparison between the theoretical prediction of the crack extension direction and experimental results indicate that the proposed criterion based on the critical strain energy density correctly predicts the direction of crack growth for the test cases considered herein.
