Abstract

A semi-empirical approach for predicting the collision (attachment) efficiency of particle deposition in porous media has been developed. Based on dimensional analysis, a quantitative relationship between the collision efficiency and a set of parameters characterizing the chemical-colloidal properties of the system has been derived. The results of this analysis show that the collision efficiency can be characterized by a one dimensionless parameter. Experimental collision efficiencies determined from controlled deposition experiments exhibited a strong correlation with this dimensionless parameter.
