Abstract

Wavelengths and oscillator strengths of in-shell transitions in highly ionized heavy atoms are treated including both relativistic and correlation effects. The 2s22p→2s2p2 transitions reported in the boron isoelectronic sequence for atomic numbers up to 50 (Sn), typify these four to nine electron heavy ions. The results indicate that nonrelativistic orbital theory (RHF) results for these transitions may be significantly in error for atomic numbers as low as 14 (Si). The predicted lifetimes are found to be in the range measurable using beam foil spectroscopy coupled with modern heavy ion accelerators.
