Abstract

Multi-level secure (MLS) database management systems (DBMS) are relatively recent but as more experience is gained in thier use, new mechanisms necessitated by security concerns become better understood. One such mechanism is polyinstantiation, which allows different versions of the same database row to exist at the same time. Polyinstantiation is very useful and can be used to solve new types of problems in secure databases, as is shown in this paper. However, its use needs to be better understood and managed. A predicate based mechanism to control and administer polyinstantiated rows in an MLS DBMS is proposed in this paper.
