Abstract

The conversion of radioactive substrates pregnenolone, corticosterone and 11- dehydrocorticosterone by intact mouse adrenal glands in vitro was compared. Progesterone, deoxycorticosterone and corticosterone were obtained from pregnenolone. 11-Dehydrocorticosterone, aldosterone and 18-hydroxycorticosterone were obtained from both pregnenolone and corticosterone, but the yield of aldosterone from pregnenolone was significantly greater thanthat from corticosterone. Added 11-dehydrocorticosterone was not transformed to aldosterone, 18-hydroxycorticosterone, or 18-hydroxy-ll-dehydrocorticosterone by either mouse or rat adrenal glands. The finding that 11-dehydrocorticosterone is not converted to aldosterone or 18- hydroxy-11-dehydrocorticosterone is in contrast to the observations by others on human and rabbit adrenals.
