Abstract

The characteristics and development of ceramic fiber and ceramic matrix composites(CMCs) prepared by polymer precursor pyrolysis have been reivewed. By analyzing the requirements for ceramic matrix oriented precursors, suitable physical/chemical properties, and the structural characteristics were proposed. The disadvantages of precursor pyrolysis(high porosity and large shrinkage) were also discussed. Accordingly to overcome these drawbacks, three methods(synthesizing new precursors with high ceramic yields, adding inert filler, and adding active filler) were proposed. The characteristics and applications of active filler controlled precursor pyrolysis were introduced in detail.
