Abstract

Congenital cytomegalovirus infections remain the leading viral cause of congenital malformations in the developed world. Women with preconceptional immunity to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) rarely if ever deliver infants with symptomatic infection. In contrast the incidence of symptomatic infection in babies born following primary maternal infection is approximately 10%. The present study was conducted to determine: (1) the percentage of seropositivity for HCMV among pregnant women due to preconceptional infection; and (2) to estimate the percentage of IgM antibodies against HCMV in fetal blood due to congenital or perinatal infection in relation to the clinical picture of the newborn.
