Abstract
The spectrum shape of 32P has been carefully remeasured in a magnetic intermediateimage spectrometer. Sources were produced in a mass separator to improve source quality and to remove 33P. The possible disturbing influences of a non-ideal magnetic field and of scattering in the various baffles, in the source and source holder were measured and upper limits were placed on the various effects. An improved source holder which gives very little scattering and an improved scintillation detector with background cancellation were used. Small corrections for finite resolution, and for backscattering from the scintillator and from the source foil were applied. In contradiction to many published results, we obtain a shape factor coefficient a = (0.01 −0.84 +0.25) × 10 −2 ( mc 2) −1, i.e., a statistical spectrum shape. The main contribution to the error comes from our estimates of possible but undetected disturbing effects. The end-point energy is 1711±2 keV.
