Preceptorship in primary care: Why is it needed?

Preceptorship is essential to the development of newly qualified nurses, as well as those moving into general practice from other areas of nursing. Mia Skelly discusses the need for preceptorship in primary care Preceptorship programmes have been recognised as fundamental to the development of a newly qualified nurse into a competent and confident practitioner. All nurses who are new to general practice should be equipped for the role by accessing a standardised preceptorship programme. In September 2017, the CapitalNurse Programme launched its Pan-London Preceptorship Framework to standardise the preceptorship programmes being offered across London. If we are to attract, grow and nurture the next generation of newly qualified nurses into primary care, then best practice programmes need to be developed.
