Abstract

The study of precedent names in the media has become widespread in modern linguistics, but there is still no classification of contemporary methods of analyzing precedent names in media discourse. The purpose of this study is to classify the main methods of analyzing precedent names in the media based on a review of modern publications. The analysis has shown that at the moment, there are six main methods of analyzing precedent names in media discourse: 1) a method of investigation of precedent names united by the source domain, implying the study of onyms from a certain conceptual domain of precedence in media texts; 2) precedent names research methods united by the target sphere, implying the analysis of onyms used to describe a certain concept in order to take stock of the source domains actualized in the media to describe the target domain chosen; 3) functional analysis aimed at identifying the functions that precedent names perform in media discourse; 4) lexicographic research methods of precedent names, including a combination of component analysis of lexemes with the study of conceptual features of onyms actualized in media discourse; 5) a method of discourse analysis which proceeds from the study of precedent names and includes all onyms without separating them between target domains and source domains of precedence; 6) a method of analyzing translations of precedent names when the researcher first gives a description of a precedent name in one language, and then compares the original text with its translation in a foreign language.
