Abstract
This paper reviews the recent application of precast deck systems for all forms of bridge but with particular emphasis on steel-concrete composite bridges. The many forms of precast elements are discussed including full-depth and partial-depth units (which require an in situ concrete topping) and the use of permanent formwork systems. Examples of the use of precast decks in Europe, in particular in Scandinavia, the Far East and the USA are highlighted. The development of ‘steel-free’ decks in Canada is also discussed.
