Abstract

Purpose: High fat and/or high sucrose (HFS) diets with low fibre intake have been associated with an increased rate of obesity, imbalance in the microbial community in the gut microbiota, and low-level systematic inflammation which is associated with a specific phenotype of osteoarthritis (OA) called metabolic OA. Furthermore, prebiotic fibre supplementation (PFS) has been reported as a successful and safe intervention preventing OA when introduced simultaneously with the HFS diet, but not if introduced after 12 weeks.
