Abstract

The present study is designed to investigate pre-service primary English teachers’ perceptions about English language teacher’s competence and their teaching practices. For the purpose of the study, 33 pre-service primary English teachers were asked to respond to the survey on the perceptions about language teacher’s competence and their teaching, including microteaching. Their responses were collected and analyzed, and the data analysis showed that there were differences between what pre-service teachers valued and what they performed in their teaching. They reported that some skills highly related to the ability to use English are important components of a language teacher’s competence; however, they reported that they didn’t frequently use those skills in teaching. However, the results suggested that pre-service teachers frequently used some skills less related to the ability to use English. In the conclusion, some pedagogical implications were suggested.
