Abstract

The pre-Permian section of the north-east German Basin is described. The incomplete record begins with a Cambrian clastic succession which is overlain by Middle Ordovician rift-related sediments. A more complete Devonian mixed clastic-carbonate section detailing the development of reefs and interdigitated mini-basins is unconformably succeeded by the Tournaisian units, where reefal development became dominant. During the Viséan the sedimentation pattern once again became more mixed with a distinct cessation at the end of the Viséan. The Upper Carboniferous continental clastic succession is extensive and is intruded and overlain by the intrusive and extrusive magmatic episode which commenced during the Stephanian and is associated with the formation and development of the north-east German Permian basin.
