Introduction

Strokes are one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality, functional disability, work absenteeism, and social-economic insecurity in Brazil and worldwide.[1] According to data provided by the World Stroke Organization (WSO), one in every six individuals in the world will have at least one stroke episode.[2] Another very relevant aspect is the monetary cost to public and private sectors related to stroke patients.
