Abstract
In the present paper, we determine the development and the current state of spelling rules for writing the names of Czech cities in Slovenian and Slovenian cities in Czech. The Slovenian orthography handbook (Slovenski pravopis) contains much more systematic and useful explanations of the ways of writing the names of foreign cities, their declension and derivation from them than the equivalent Czech handbook (Pravidla českého pravopisu). By studying specific texts, we try to determine the actual situation, the needs of users, and the best solutions for writing Slovenian and Czech exonyms. By comparing the orthography handbooks of the two languages, we arrive at a suggestion on how to improve the deficient treatment, especially in Czech orthography.
