Abstract

Prairie dogs, endemic to the Great Plains of North America, are sometimes trapped and sold as pets. Three recent articles describe transmission of diseases -- monkeypox and tularemia -- from these animals to humans. In the spring of 2003, prairie dogs housed with exotic African rodents became infected with monkeypox virus, resulting in transmission to humans (see Journal Watch Infectious Diseases Jul 28 2003).
