Abstract
AbstractIn recent years there has been an increasing interest in organizational knowledge and knowledge management. Much of this literature does not define what knowledge is, treating knowledge as merely a collection of facts which may be managed just as any other organizational resource. This paper argues that this approach to knowledge does not provide managers with the basis needed in order to create the knowledge based organization. Building on contemporary pragmatism this paper creates a definition of knowledge which may underpin the organization's approach to knowledge management. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
