Abstract

This is the 1987 Foundation Lecture. Each year for more than two dozen years, the Foundation for Public Relations Research and Education has selected an outstanding leader in public relations or a related field to present an address at the Foundation's annual luncheon. This year the luncheon was held in Los Angeles on November 8, as part of the convention of the Public Relations Society of America. In his introductory remarks, Edward Block told his audience, “What you are about to hear are simply the musings of an old practitioner seeking to make sense of the common sense of his four decades of experience.” He reminds us that, in spite of the winds of change, there are basic and fundamental principles of public relations that haven't changed. Ultimately, he writes, strategic communication is still the main activity of the field.
