Abstract

In 1992, the Executive Committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) appointed a program committee to organize and conduct an ICMI Study on the topic “What is research in mathematics education, and what are its results?” The committee was charged with preparing a discussion document that would frame the topic, conduct a study conference at which the topic would be discussed and analyzed, and produce a report to be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in the New ICMI Study Series. The charge included the request that major outcomes of the study be presented at the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Zurich. The discussion document (Balacheff et al., 1998) was published in several journals for mathematics educators in late 1992 and early 1993.
