Abstract

Optical voltage transformer (OVT) is a new voltage transformer emerging with the development of microelectronics technology, optoelectronic technology and digital technology, which is based on linear photoelectric effect and polarization optics. Compared with traditional transformers, OVT has the advantages of optoelectronic isolation, wide frequency band, high accuracy and wide dynamic range, so OVT was highly expected when it appeared. However, at the early stage of OVT’s promotion, OVT was mainly used to measure power frequency voltage. Moreover, although the capacitive voltage transformer had many shortcomings compared with OVT, it could still well meet the needs of voltage measurement of the current operating equipment and CVT productions are more mature, so the further development of OVT was hindered. The development of traveling wave protection which requires the use of wide frequency band voltages that couldn’t be provided by CVT puts forward new application scenarios for OVT. This paper presents a practical scheme of passive optical voltage transformer in high voltage substations, which could contribute to the further popularization of OVT in substations.
