Abstract
We analysed many of the commercially available stand magnifiers to determine their equivalent powers Fe, image positions l' and emergent vergences L', MULTACC factors MT and resultant linear fields of view W, given aperture dimensions A and several levels of accommodation Fa or near spectacle addition Fs worn by the observer. We determined the practical limits to magnification for each stand magnifier, and developed a protocol for prescription recommendations. It is clear that the manufacturers' data cannot be relied upon for accuracy, and are inadequate for the complete specification of low vision applicances. We demonstrate that under some conditions of use, appliances of moderate dioptral power give the same magnification and a wider field of view than those of higher power.
