Abstract

Details of routine hospital antibiotic bioassay by the disk method using Bacillus subtilis are presented. The choice of medium and adjustment of medium pH affect results, depending on the antibiotic assayed. The speed of growth of the test organism is accelerated in the pH range 7.6 to 7.8 and results are available in 300BD hours. Use of Bacillus cereus allows measurement of aminoglycosides in the presence of penicillins and cephalosporins. Ranges of antibiotic standards giving linear curves, as well as suitable media for various antibiotics, are presented.
