Abstract

The theoretical concept for the use of mosaic indicators for species diversity in agricultural landscapes is illustrated on the basis of a practical example. A method to organise data on the specific regional natural conditions on the basis of an existing organisational chart of natural areas in Germany, digital results of biotope mapping and aerial views was developed for a selection of indicators (species, ecological groups) appropriate to given natural conditions on the regional scale. The use of the mosaic indicator concept was demonstrated for the example of bird species in a selected mosaic landscape characterised by a typical regional biotope structure—a special density of hedges and small bodies of water. On the basis of the indicator species, measures for the improvement of the habitat situation were derived with the goal of maintaining the landscape peculiarities and promoting specific diversity adapted on these special site conditions. The methods developed to regionalise the landscapes while taking into account spatial variations make it possible for farmers throughout Germany, no matter what natural characteristics each individual farm may have, to participate in programs to promote biological diversity and make a contribution to natural conservation.
