Abstract

SynopsisThe advantages—and disadvantages—of bright nickel plating, as compared with dull nickel plating, are discussed. The merits of various types of fully bright and semi-bright nickel plating solutions—containing either organic chemicals or cobalt salts as brighteners—are compared. Methods for controlling and purifying these solutions are given, together with details of the plant needed. Cleaning procedures that are satisfactory for metals to be dull nickel plated are often not suitable prior to bright nickel plating and suggestions for appropriate cleaning cycles are therefore made. Other points where the techniques needed for bright nickel plating differ from those applicable to dull plating are discussed.
