Abstract

The present paper develops a critical analysis around the fundamental parameters determining water barrier characteristics, to the purpose of singling out their influence on the design of the barriers themselves. Air and water flows in the system, as well as geometric dimensions and environmental conditions, are particularly considered. Moreover, a design-oriented numerical simulation is presented, aimed at determining the minimum barrier size required to obtain a sufficient reduction of dangerous environmental effects caused by releases of toxic or flammable substances.
