Abstract
Plant Protection and Quarantine Program (PPQP) activities are designed to prevent the entry, establishment, and spread of foreign pests into the United States and to suppress periodic outbreaks of certain native pests. Activities include surveys, regulatory inspection, eradication (elimination) or regulatory pest management. The objective of the regulatory agencies is to obtain maximum pest control or elimination using chemicals or other methods which will have the minimum effect on the environment. New control tools, including pesticides which have a unique mode of action, cultural techniques, sterile insect release, and other methods are evaluated constantly for use in these programs. Biological control techniques are substituted for chemicals when the objective of the program can be met. Semiochemicals are becoming one of the more important tools used for survey, control, and evaluation in PPQP activities.
