Abstract

Objective: To test the emerging hypothesis that there is selective small fiber degeneration and loss in distal residual limbs of amputees. Design: Prospective, case series. Setting: Research center. Participants: 35 subjects (23 with pain, 11 without pain, 1 unknown) with a unilateral (upper- or lower-) limb amputation. Interventions: We measured and compared thresholds for cold and warm perception, and cold and hot pain perception at sites on the distal residual limbs of amputee patients to similar regions on their contralateral, unaffected extremity.
