Abstract

Objective: To analyze the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) and associated risk factors in military combatants with major limb amputations as the result of injuries sustained during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. Design: Retrospective cohort study reviewing records of all combat amputees treated between March 19, 2003, and March 19, 2005. Setting: Academic military medical center. Participants: 195 active duty service members between the ages of 18 to 46, treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for acute traumatic major limb amputation.
