Abstract

Setting: Intermediate care community hospital. Patient: An 81-year-old woman with chronic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who previously had bilateral knee and hip replacements. Case Description: The patient had suffered from multiple left femoral periprosthetic fractures with eventual nonunion and mechanical prosthetic failure. Since her initial hip replacement, the patient had been nonambulatory for 2 years, required maximal assistance for transfers and activities of daily living and was living in a nursing home.
