Abstract

A method is presented for analyzing data on nucleonnucleon scattering in the energy region where absorption processes cannot be neglected. The imaginary parts of the phase shifts are estimated from data on pion production with the use of the (3/2,3/2) resonance model. Secondly the scattering data are analyzed to obtain real phase shifts. The search is made for real phase shifts in the phase- shift space, which is restricted by extrapolating the solution established below about 400 Mev. An analysis is made, according to this scheme, for p-p scattering at 660 Mev. The absorption occurs mainly in the initial P, D, and F states. Data on elastic differential cross section, polarization, and depolarization can be reproduced by a set of phase shifts that is smoothly connected with a particular solution below about 400 Mev. The measured C/sub nn/(90 nif- ) and C /sub Kp/(90 nif- ) values are also consistent with those predicted by the solution obtained. (auth)
