Abstract
Objective: Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a method of evaluating arterial stiffness that is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular complications. The objective of this study was to compare the arterial stiffness in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and healthy individuals and to identify the relationship between arterial stiffness and levels of galectin 3 (Gal 3) and aldosterone (ALDO) - substances with profibrogenic effect on cardiovascular system. Design and method: 120 persons (72 female and 48 male, 51,5 ± 8,5 years old) were examined and divided into 2 groups: MetS (n = 60) with 3 or more components (IDF, 2005) and healthy control (n = 60). Groups did not differ significantly by gender and age (p > 0,05). The examination included: medical history, anthropometry, lipids, glucose, blood pressure; serum Gal3 and ALDO levels (Enzyme Immunoassay) were analyzed. The assessment of carotid arteries was performed with ultrasound scanning and patients with atherosclerosis were excluded. Carotid-femoral PWV was determined by Sphygmocor. Results: Carotid-femoral PWV was higher in group of MetS compared with healthy control (9,2 ± 2,0 and 6,3 ± 1,0 m/s; p < 0,001). Serum Gal 3 in patients with MetS was more than 1,5 fold higher compared to the healthy control (0,48 [0,42;1,39] and 0,27 [0,24;0,32] ng/ml; p < 0,001), and ALDO was significantly higher almost more than 2 fold in the MetS (135,0 [83,5;203,8] and 69,8[46,0;119,0] pg/ml; p < 0,001). Positive correlation between PWV and Gal 3 (r = 0,66; p < 0,001, Spearman) and aldosterone (r = 0,46; p < 0,001, Spearman) was revealed. Conclusions: “Gold standart” of arterial stiffness – carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and levels of galectin 3, aldosterone were higher in metabolic syndrome patients, than in healthy persons. We propose that profibrogenic substances: galectin 3 and aldosterone can induce morphological changes in arterial wall, because we revealed significant relationship between these parameters.
