Abstract
Introductory courses in physical science often take a classical approach that stress coverage, a closely prescribed set of laboratories, and standard examinations. These courses are not suitable for those preparing to become elementary teachers. Powerful Ideas in Physical Science: A Model Course offers four modules that serve as models of a physical science course suitable for pre-service elementary teachers, using recent discoveries in cognitive science. Materials from the Heat and Conservation of Energy unit will be used in the sample class.
